Albert Henry “Al” Haefner, 88, of Battle Creek, Michigan died at Bronson Battle Creek Hospital on Monday, January 27, 2025.
Al was born April 20, 1936, in the Bronx, New York, the son of Henry and Mathilda (Lurz) Haefner. He grew up in the Bronx and graduated from St. John Academy in 1954. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Fordham University in New York City. Al began his career with General Foods at the Maxwell House Plant in Hoboken, NJ, moved to White Plains, NY and then to Battle Creek, MI, eventually retiring as the Plant Controller for Post Cereals in 1992, after 33 years.
He met Jane, the love of his life during freshman year of high school. Al Haefner and Mary Jane Tannert were united in marriage on December 26, 1956, at St. Helena Roman Catholic Church in the Bronx. Surviving are Jane, his wife of 68 years; son, Albert D. (Denise) Haefner of Ballwin, MO; daughter, Jane Haefner of Battle Creek; seven granddaughters, six great-granddaughters, two great grandsons; a brother, John Haefner of Orlando, FL and several nieces, nephews and their families. Al was preceded in death by his parents, and a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ellen and Robert Roach.
Al was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and a longtime member of its finance committee. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus in New York. He previously served on the board of directors for the former Leila Y. Post Montgomery Hospital. Al was a former member of Riverside Country Club, enjoyed golfing and playing cards. He loved watching his grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s activities and sporting events. Al will be remembered for his great love of family and friends.
Friends will be received 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Thursday, January 30, 2025, at Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Cremation Preneed Care, where the Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. Thursday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Christopher Ankley at St. Joseph Catholic Church 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 31, 2025. Committal and inurnment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
