Just five hours shy of her ninety-second birthday, Alice Arlene Mintern entered the Gates of Heaven on February 11, 2013. Alice, the daughter of Benjamin G. and Mable B. (Gorbutt) Mintern, was born in Union City, MI on February 12, 1921. Her childhood was spent in several communities all within southwestern Michigan. She graduated from Otsego High School in 1939 and Argubright Business School. Alice had over forty years of service at Michigan National Bank with most of those years spent in the Mortgage Loan Department. She was a fifty-year member of the Order of Eastern Star, Bedford Chapter #471 and also a fifty-year member of the First Congregational Church, Battle Creek. She was a soft spoken individual yet had a quick wit. Alice was an avid reader and a dogged puzzle solver. She greatly enjoyed tending her gardens and traveling. Alice's parents, her three siblings and their spouses preceded her in death. They include Edward (Shirley/Leona) Mintern, Blanche (Harold) Minor, and Edith (Russ) Laraway. Alice was a beloved aunt and friend to twelve nieces and nephews and their children including her nephew, Harold I. (Joy H.) Minor of Kalamazoo, MI and her niece, Sylvia Laraway of Kalamazoo. Also surviving is her longtime friend (Edith) Caroline (Johnston) Hodgden of Battle Creek, MI. With appreciation, her family wishes to express their thanks to the Parish Care Group of the First Congregational Church for their numerous visits and attention. In addition, her family wishes to acknowledge the caregivers at Bronson Battle Creek Hospital, Borgess Hospital, Southwest Rehabilitation, The Oaks at NorthPointe Woods and SouthernCare Hospice.
The Graveside Service to celebrate Alice's life will be held on Friday, May 10th at 11:00 a.m. at Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens, Battle Creek with Rev. Thomas M. Ryberg, Associate Pastor of the First Congregational Church of Battle Creek, officiating. There will be no visitation and memorial contributions in Alice's honor may be directed to the First Congregational Church, 145 Capital Avenue, NE, Battle Creek, MI 49017 or to SouthernCare, Inc. (Hospice), 4341 S. Westnedge Avenue, Kalamazoo, MI 49008. The Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home, Battle Creek is in charge of all the arrangements. .
