Alkiviades "Al" "Mr. Greek" Ignatiades, 87, of Battle Creek died peacefully on Friday, July 17, 2020.
Al was born April 14, 1933 on the Island of Andrus in Greece, the son of Alexander and Alexandra (Pitselos) Ignatiades. He came to the United States at age 18 to live with his uncle in New York and worked in his uncle's Brooklyn floral shop; and at the same time in the wholesale floral and fish markets. During that time he also attended night school to learn English. Al was employed at Hastings Manufacturing and at Atwood Corporation in Lowell as a supervisor. He worked for Grand Rapids Brass as a superintendent. Al owned & operated the Handy Store on Calhoun Street with his wife, Marilyn for many years. After he retired, Al drove cars for Sunshine Toyota and several other local car dealers.
Al was united in marriage to Marilyn Mae Turnes on September 13, 1958 in Bay Ridge, NY. Al was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn on August 20, 1993. Surviving are two sons, Alexander (Nanette) Ignatiades of Battle Creek, Michael A. (Tracy) Ignatiades of Kingsville, TX; grandchildren, Michael A. Ignatiades, Jr., Anna Ignatiades, Kimberly Ignatiades, Jason (Janelle) Noble, Marilyn Ignatiades; two great-grandchildren, Jackson and Joslynn; a sister, Maroulio Kostopoulou and several nieces, nephews and cousins in the U.S. and Greece. In addition to his wife Al was also preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Athena Trapalis.
Al was a member of Sts. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church. He enjoyed working in his garden, taking care of his cars and cooking on the grill. He will be remembered for his outgoing personality, willingness to share his opinions and loving his family and dogs. Al worked long hours and he had a hard work ethic that he instilled in his children and others.
Friends will be received 10:00 a.m. â 12:00 noon & 4:00 â 6:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care.
A Trisagion service will be held 12:00 noon Thursday at the church and a funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, July 23, 2020 at Sts. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 1020 W. Goguac St. in Battle Creek. Committal and interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
