Ann, age 65, passed away unexpectedly at her home in Charlotte, North Carolina on April 28, 2015.


She was born on September 26, 1949 in Ann Arbor, Michigan to the late Gail Newland and Ruth Zahn Newland. Her family moved to Jackson, Michigan where she graduated from Parkside High School in 1967. She received her Bachelor's Degree from Michigan State University in 1971 and then moved to Kalamazoo and worked for American National Bank, followed by AT&T. She married and moved to Foster City, California and continued with AT&T. Following her divorce, she transferred to Charlotte, NC. After retirement from AT&T, Ann returned to school to be educated in landscape and started her own business in landscape design, installation and maintenance, which she loved.


Another important part of her life was Christ Lutheran Church where she was active in her singles group, prayer group and the part she loved best, volunteer work at McClintock Elementary where she created and implemented art projects for a class of economically disadvantaged children every Tuesday evening. In many ways, Ann was an extremely creative person, including not only the volunteer work but also her landscape design, selection of books for her great niece and nephews and painting. Ann loved music and was accomplished on the piano. Ann also loved her home and neighborhood where she made close friends and is survived by her dear friend, neighbor and walking buddy, Gay Griffin. She made many road trips to Michigan where her family looked forward to her visits and annual trip to the Ann Arbor Art Fair and family reunion.


Ann is survived by her mother, Ruth Zahn Newland of Park Village Pines, Kalamazoo, MI, sister Elaine (Steve Ginsberg) of Richland, MI, nieces Aimee (Brian) Greenfield of Rocky River, OH, Allison Ginsberg of Richland, MI and nephew Nick (Wendy) Ginsberg of Grand Rapids, MI, a great niece and nephews.


The Memorial Service to celebrate Ann's life was held on Thursday, May 21st at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home, Richland Chapel. Interment was in Yorkville Cemetery, Ross Township of Kalamazoo County, MI. Memorial donations in Ann's honor may be directed to Christ Lutheran Church, 4519 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC 28226.
