Anna K. "Kit" Winger, 82, died at Select Specialty Hospital in Battle Creek, MI on Monday, February 18, 2013.
She was born in Waynesboro, PA on October 13, 1930, to Frank H. and Ruth (Roth) Winger. She graduated from Greencastle High School, Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pa., and then received a Master in Library Science from Drexel Institute of Technology in Philadelphia, Pa.
Her professional career began with the organization of the library at James Buchanan Jr.-Sr. High School, Mercersburg, PA; back to Juniata College Library as Assistant Librarian, then cataloging books (even translating in Russian) at the University of Delaware. While Librarian of the Franklin County Library, she drove the bookmobile to schools and helped establish the library in her home town of Greencastle, Pa. For twenty-four years she was librarian at the Defense Logistics Services Center in Battle Creek, building the collection and taking the library into the computer age. Her activities included: Altrusa International, Inc. where she held most club offices and served as chairman of many club committees. She regularly attended District Conferences and International Conventions (only missed one Convention). On the District level she served as District Editor, Parliamentarian, First Vice Governor, Governor-Elect and was Governor in 1980-1982. She developed a Protocol Manual and a Planning Guide for District Personnel. She was a member of the Red Hat Ladies and had been active in AAUW and American Business Woman's Association. Her hobbies included traveling, crocheting, knitting, counted cross stitch, decorative painting, and reading. Anna enjoyed traveling and had visited England, Scotland, Ireland, Belgium, France, Austria, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Wales, East Germany, New Zealand, Fiji, Australia, Tahiti, Canada, Mexico, many Caribbean Islands, Greece, Egypt, Turkey, Rhodes.
Her parents; sister and brother-in-law, Frances and Robert Forney; and nephew, Donald S. Forney preceded her in death.
Surviving are a nephew, James Robert Forney; of Greencastle, Pa.; three nieces, Jean Forney (Bruce) Bartley of Independence, OH, Diane Forney (James) Hollenbaugh of Fayetteville, PA, and Susan Forney of Chambersburg, PA; and by several grand nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held at Browns Mill Cemetery in Greencastle, PA at a later date.
