Betty L. (Wertz) Nelson

Betty L. (Wertz) Nelson, age 92, of Battle Creek died peacefully on June 17, 2022 after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease. Betty was born in Battle Creek on August 8, 1929, the daughter of William and Ethel (Miles) Vaughan. At the age of 3, Betty was adopted by T.J. and Evva (Redmond) Wertz. Betty graduated from Battle Creek Central High School in 1947. She retired in 2007 after many years as an Optician with Southwest Michigan Eye Center.

Betty was a member of First United Methodist Church. She served as a Red Cross volunteer for more than 25 years. She loved animals, enjoyed playing bridge, collecting angels, and cups and saucers.

Betty is survived by her daughter Paula Nelson of St Paul, MN, three grandchildren; Casey Nelson of Battle Creek, Jonathan Drogue of St. Paul, Samantha (Wes) Thayer of Minneapolis and one great grandson, Ian Thayer of Minneapolis. She is preceded in death by her husband of 69 years L.G. Nelson, Jr. and her son, Daniel Nelson.

Memorial service will be held Thursday, July 21, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care with a visitation one hour prior. A private interment for the family will be held at Fort Custer National Cemetery.
