Christopher Thomas "Chris" Schenk

November 14, 1983 — August 3, 2013

Sgt. Christopher Thomas "Chris" Schenk, USARNG, age 29, of Grand Rapids and formerly of Allegan passed away with his wonderful family at his side on August 3, 2013 at the Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital in Hines, IL from injuries sustained in a tragic accident on July 4, 2013 at Torch Lake near Traverse City. He was born in Fremont, Michigan on November 14, 1983, the loving son of Brian C. and Mary H. (Stayman) Schenk.

Chris graduated from Allegan High School in 2002 and furthered his education at Western Michigan University, KVCC and was currently pursuing a degree at Grand Valley State University. Chris has faithfully served his country since 2002 as a member of the United States Army National Guard, serving two tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan, receiving numerous awards and decorations for his extraordinary service.

Chris is survived by his parents, Mary Stayman Schenk of Allegan and Brian (Sarah) Schenk of Wyoming, Michigan; his girlfriend, Rachelle Miller of Marshall; his son, whom he was excited about being born this coming November, Tucker Schenk; his brother, Randy Schenk of Kalamazoo; his sister, Robin Schenk of Kalamazoo; his grandmother, "Tommy" Schenk; 2 step-brothers; 1 step-sister and several aunts, uncles & cousins. Chris was preceded in death by his grandparents, "Bud" Schenk and Marvin & Dorothy Stayman.

A true outdoorsman and marksman, Chris enjoyed going to gun ranges, snorkeling, swimming & all types of water sports, riding his dirt bikes, bicycling, running, travelling and was a Detroit Sports fan. Chris enjoyed summers at the cottage and family pets were special to him. His true passion in life was his family and friends, and he loved spending as much time with them as he could

Chris touched the lives of so many people with his genuine and caring heart. He will truly be missed by all who knew him.

A visitation will be held 1:00 to 3:00 and 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, August 8, 2013 at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Richland Chapel, 9170 East D. Avenue, Richland where a scripture service and sharing of memories will be held at 7:00 p.m., Thursday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 12:00 noon, Friday, August 9, 2013 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, 61 North 23rd Street, Battle Creek, MI 49015. Interment with full military honors will follow at Fort Custer National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider making donations to Chris Schenk Assistance Fund , C/O your Local PNC Bank or to the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation.
