Clifford "Lee" Hoffman, age 71, a lifelong master mechanic, from Augusta, MI, died suddenly on Tuesday morning, May 8, 2018. He was born in Battle Creek on April 5, 1947 to Clifford B. and Marian (Armour) Hoffmann. Lee graduated from Gull Lake High School with the Class of 1965, and then faithfully served his country as a SP4 in the United States Army from 1966 to 1968.
Lee married the "Love of His Life", Carol Davis on May 22, 1999; she sadly preceded him in death on March 16, 2015. He is survived by his mother, Marian; his daughter, Shelly Hoffman; his step-daughter, Vicki (John) Bycroft; his siblings, Norma (Sam) Hostetler, Ross and Steve (Donna) Hoffman, and Virginia Lawson; his six grandchildren; Danny, Aaron, and Ashlea Thomason, Tyler Hill, Erin and Joe Warren, and eight-great grandchildren. Lee was also preceded in death by his father, Clifford; and his brother, Larry.
Lee managed Springfield Auto Service until his retirement. He was best known for his expert ability in building transmissions and high performance engines. Drag racing was a major part of his life. He was also an avid tournament pool player and enjoyed spending time with his friends at the Springfield Tavern. Lee will always be remembered as a kind and giving "Teddy Bear" who absolutely adored children and would do anything he could to help others.
The family will receive friends 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., Sunday, May 20th at Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care, Battle Creek and then will continue the celebration of Lee's life at 4:30 p.m., Sunday at Wild Mike's Restaurant, 22575 North Bedford Rd. Battle Creek. Funeral services with full military honors will be held 1:00 p.m., Monday, May 21st at the Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta.
