Dorcas E. (Beckett) "Pinky" Harris

June 27, 1925 — July 19, 2015

Dorcas E. (Beckett) "Pinky" Harris, 90, a lifelong Battle Creek resident, died at The Legacy at The Oaks at NorthPointe Woods on Sunday, July 19, 2015.

Dorcas was born June 27, 1925 in Battle Creek the daughter of Clyde E. and Ruth E. (Wemple) Beckett. She was a 1943 graduate of Battle Creek Central High School. During high school she worked for her aunt & uncle, Myrtle & Francis Greensmith at Greensmith Florist and she continued to help them during busy holidays for years.

Dorcas was united in marriage to John H. "Jack" Harris, Jr. on March 15, 1952. Dorcas was preceded in death by her husband, Jack on May 22, 1983. Surviving are two sons, John H. (Diane) Harris, III of Toledo, Ohio, Thomas L. (Tammi) Harris of Battle Creek; two grandchildren, John H. Harris IV and Meredith E. Harris, two nieces and several nephews. In addition to her husband, Dorcas was also preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Clarisse R. Beckett; and two brothers, Fred A. Beckett and Louis C. Beckett.

Dorcas' parents were founding members of Trinity Lutheran Church, where she was baptized, confirmed and attended all of her life. She was a care giver to many of the elderly at the church. She was a member of the Dorcas church circle and a local sorority. Dorcas was a great wife, mother and grandmother. She was a PTA member, a Cub Scout Den mother; and the ham sandwich lady to the sports teams on which her sons competed and to M.S.U. tailgaters. She was a Hidden Bearcat, an award given to Battle Creek Central wrestling supporters. Dorcas was a high school and college wrestling supporter, surrogate parent to teammates and friends of her sons; and an avid Detroit Tigers fan. She was a flower enthusiast, wrote the Ostomy Club newsletter and was active in the club. Dorcas helped organize her Battle Creek Central High School class reunions. She was a member of the Needle Work Guild and helped at The Charitable Union. She was a member of a local Birthday Club. Dorcas enjoyed golfing and was a member of Marywood Country Club.

Friends will be received at Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care 4:00-7:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 21, 2015. Funeral services will be officiated by Pastor Kjersten Priddy at the funeral home 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 22, 2015. Committal and interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
