Dr. Richard Nicholas "Nick" Johns of East Haddam, Connecticut



Nick, age 64, succumbed to a long illness, at home, on Wednesday, December 30, 2015. Nick, the son of Robert and Marjorie (Krause) Johns, was born in Eldora, IA on June 26, 1951.

Nick is survived by his wife Susan (Suzy), son Landon, daughter Kesha, step-daughter Sarah, step-son James, granddaughters Kendra and Audrie, grandsons, Jacob, Trystin, Matthias and Elias.

Nick grew up in Iowa. He completed his work in higher education at the University of Iowa, Northeast Missouri State (Truman), and the University of Northern Iowa. He provided dedicated leadership to public schools in Iowa, Michigan and New York. His work in education touched the lives of thousands of children and inspired hundreds of teachers to reflect on and improve their practice. Nick was a kind and generous man of strong character with complete and uncomplicated faith in the love of God. He lived his life with dignity and humor. He will be missed by all who knew him.

The Funeral Service to celebrate Nick's life will be held on Thursday, January 7th at 11:00 a.m. at the Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care, Augusta Chapel, 307 N. Webster Street, with the Rev. Denny Coon of Des Moines, IA, officiating. Nick's family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will follow in East Hickory Corners Cemetery, Barry Township, MI. In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be made to The Nature Conservancy, 4245 North Fairfax Dr., Suite 100, Arlington, VA 22203-1606; Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or to The Humane Society of the United States, 2100 L St., NW, Washington, D.C. 20037
