Elizabeth Anne (nee Gantt) Barnes passed away on June 10, 2024, at the age of 88. She was preceded in death by her parents, Florence and William Gantt and husband, Robert. She is survived by her children, Janet Barnes and Robert (Luanne) Barnes; grandchildren, Cara (Tristan) Matthies, Lee (Erin) Heeringa, Justin (Rachel) Boyd, Ethan (Katelyn) Barnes and Lucas Barnes; great-grandchildren, Kinsley Matthies and Isla, Callum and Hendrik Heeringa.
Elizabeth Anne was born in Richmond, Virginia and met her husband of 43 years at a USO dance. They were married January 21, 1956, and then moved to France during his time in the Army and enjoyed a time of traveling. After the military, they returned to Richmond, and in 1968, they moved to Portage, Michigan. She was an active member in several churches throughout her life, playing the organ, directing the choir and teaching Sunday School and VBS. She worked in financial settings as a secretary overseeing trusts and later in the tax department at Upjohn. Elizabeth Anne had a love of dogs and cats and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She had close friends from childhood that she stayed in touch with her entire life.
The family would like to thank the caregivers at The Oaks at Byron Center, Gentiva Hospice, and Rev. Merle Buwalda for their great care and friendship. The burial took place at Fort Custer National Cemetery and the family is planning a private celebration of her life. Personal
