Gwendolyn Kay (Spencer) Winans

Gwendolyn Kay (Spencer) Winans, 79, of Battle Creek, Michigan passed away at home with her family at her side on Thursday, October 3, 2024.  

Gwendolyn was born March 5, 1945, in Hastings, Michigan, the daughter of Earl and Lillian (Crocker) Spencer. She graduated from Hastings High School and was employed as a Nurse’s Aide for many years, especially helping those with Dementia and Alzheimer’s related challenges. For 21 years, she resided in Zephyrhills, Florida and moved to Battle Creek in 2011.  

Gwendolyn was united in marriage to Larry Lee Winans on July 12, 1969, in Hastings, Michigan or at. Surviving are her husband, Larry of 55 years; daughter and son-in-law, Tamerah and Gregory Metzger; sons and daughters-in-law, James and Vicky Slagel and Bill and Tammy Harrison; daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and Jay Kelly; 15 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Dawn and Mike Balent; brother and sister-in-law, James and Althea Spencer and several cousins, nieces, nephews and their families. Gwendolyn was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Candy Fisher.  

Gwendolyn enjoyed listening to local bands. She loved playing Bingo. Most precious to her was spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, especially at Thanksgiving and Christmas family gatherings. Gwendolyn will be remembered as a giving and loving person.  

Friends will be received 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 8, 2024, at Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Cremation Preneed Care, where funeral service will be officiated by Pastor James Hackworth 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 8, 2024. The service will be livestreamed and may be viewed at: https://vimeo.com/event/4630376 . Committal and inurnment will follow at Fort Custer National Cemetery.
