John David Hassebrock, 74, of Battle Creek, passed away peacefully at Reflections Memory Care on Tuesday, November 12, 2024. John was born on September 26, 1950, in Mount Vernon, Illinois, to Melvin and Dorothy Hassebrock. He grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, graduated from Parkway High School, and earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Wyoming.
John began his career as general manager of the Battle Creek Holiday Inn and later owned and operated The Moto Photoshop at Kalamazoo’s Crossroads Mall. He managed accounts for Lawson Printers, consulted for the Jessup Group, and in retirement worked part-time as a property manager for the Huntington Hills and Bridgewood condominium associations and also contributed to Stetler Construction.
John is survived by his wife of 45 years, Linda; his son, David; his brothers, Bob, Ron, and Stan; and his sister, Susan. Also mourning his loss are his beloved pets, Taz and Wembley, and his granddog, Lexi. He was preceded in death by his parents and younger brother, Craig.
John kept himself active and connected to the things he loved. He took regular long walks at Riverside Park. He also treasured his weekly sailing trips on Lake Michigan with his close friends, Steve and Dave, which he continued to do until shortly before his passing. A dedicated woodworking hobbyist, he created Adirondack chairs, Kentucky stick chairs, birdhouses, and lovingly restored antiques. Known for his dry wit, loyalty, and storytelling, John was a proud father who was deeply involved in his son’s life. He looked forward each year to trips to Mackinac Island and Chicago with Linda and friends, creating cherished memories.
A celebration of life open house for John will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 23, at his home at 148 Pheasant Run.
