Martha L. (Smith) Mills of Augusta, MI








Martha, age 79, died the afternoon of the 4th of July, 2014 at Borgess Medical Center, Kalamazoo, MI, following a brief illness.


Martha, the daughter of Fred and Edith (Evans) Smith, was born on December 4, 1934 in Battle Creek, MI; she was a lifetime area resident and 1952 graduate of Galesburg-Augusta High School. She had been employed as a Secretary for the Checker Cab Company in Kalamazoo and retired in 2002 from Hudson's Department Store (Macy's) in Battle Creek as a Customer Service Representative after 20 years of faithful service. Martha enjoyed knitting and ceramic making.


Martha was united in marriage to Kenneth E. "Ken" Mills on April 7, 1966 in Augusta and he preceded her in death on September 11, 2010. Surviving are her two daughters, Vicki L. (Phil) Lanuti of Ann Arbor, MI and Brenda J. (David) Green of Whitmore Lake, MI; five grandchildren, Heather Mills, Rachel Mills, Michelle Lanuti, Eric Garnett and Shannon Rosenberger; three great grandchildren, Tyvae' Mills, Zapporah Mills and Asia Joy Mills and her "Faithful Companion," Winston, her Yorkshire Terrier. Martha was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Brian Scott Wood in 1979 and by two brothers, Albert and Edward Smith.



The Graveside Service to celebrate Martha's life will be held on Thursday, July 10th at 2:00 p.m. in the Augusta (MI) Cemetery with the Rev. Robert G. Muirhead of Battle Creek, officiating. There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Martha's honor may be directed to the Humane Society of Huron Valley, 3100 Cherry Hill Road, Ann Arbor, MI 48105. The Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home, Augusta Chapel (269-731-4212) is in charge of all the arrangements.
