Michael Patrick Staib, age 63, a lifelong Battle Creek resident was unexpectedly stricken with a heart attack Sunday, May 2nd, 2021. He died peacefully with his family by his side on Thursday, May 13th, 2021, at Ascension-Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo.
Mike was born July 21st, 1957 in Battle Creek the son of James Alfred and Elinor Jean (McCauley) Staib. He graduated from Battle Creek Central High School in 1976. Mike worked as a sales representative at Battle Creek Tile & Mosaic Company for the past 27 years.
Mike married Teresa L Hawthorne August 18th, 1979. The couple were blessed with three children, and two granddaughters.
Mike was an avid runner and cross-country skier. He regularly ran with a group of friends; completed the Detroit Marathon in 1995 and 2010, and competed in the Indianapolis Mini Marathon, North Country Trail Relay, VASA, and many 5K and 10K events. He loved the outdoors, and enjoyed biking and camping at the cabin "Up North". Mike had a great love of music, and was a huge Beatles and Paul McCartney fan. He was a diehard sports fan and cheered on the Detroit Tigers, Green Bay Packers, University of Michigan sport teams, the Detroit Red Wings and occasionally Notre Dame. Mike was a Boy Scout Leader for his son, Ryan and coached both his sons in the West Side Little League. Mike loved his granddaughters, his family and his friends unconditionally and will be remembered for his caring and loving nature.
Mike is survived by his wife, Teresa; three children, Michael (Jennifer) Staib, Ryan Staib and Sarah Staib; two granddaughters, Kinleigh and Taylor Staib; sisters, Pam Warsop, Linda (Daniel) Medich, Kimberly Staib, brothers Rock (Mike's twin) and T. J. Staib; brothers-in-law, Russell (Lisa) Hawthorne, Charles Hawthorne, Pat Rolfe; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Mike was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, James and Jeffery Staib; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Leota and Russell Hawthorne; sister-in-law, Cynthia Rolfe; and brother-in-law, James Warsop.
Friends will be received 2:00-4:00 p.m. & 6:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 19, 2021 at Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care, where the Rosary will be recited at 8:00 p.m. A service to celebrate Mike's life will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 20, 2021at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made in honor of Mike to Healthy Kids Running Series.
