Robert (Bob) Nelson, Jr, 74, of Battle Creek, MI, passed away peacefully at home on February 15, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. A devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, and great-grandfather, he leaves a legacy of kindness, strength, and unwavering love. Born April 16, 1950, in Chicago, IL, Bob grew up with a passion for life, faith, family, and Da Bears. He attended Battle Creek Central High School where he played football as part of the state championship team.
At the heart of his world was his beloved wife, Opal. Their love story began in childhood and grew into a beautiful 56-year marriage filled with laughter, and countless cherished memories. Together, they built a family rooted in love and respect. Bob was a proud and loving father to his three beautiful daughters who will forever cherish his wisdom, humor, and unwavering support. His role as a grandfather and great-grandfather brought him immense joy, and he found great pride in watching his family grow.
Bob was known for his warm heart, strong work ethic, and great sense of humor. His quick wit made everyone laugh. Bob touched the lives of those who had the privilege of knowing him and he made a lasting impact on his community, friends, and loved ones. Dedicated to supporting his family, Bob held various positions throughout his career, including roles at Battle Creek Gas Co., Sub Surface Construction Co., and spent many years with the City of Battle Creek. He started as a laborer and quickly advanced to the role of Superintendent of Field Services. But, the job he loved the most was the years he spent as the maintenance supervisor at St. Philip Catholic Central High School. Bob also enjoyed time outdoors fishing, mowing, and spending time with the horses. He loved supporting his kids and later his grandkids, cheering them on from the sidelines no matter what their activity might be.
Bob's memory will be carried on by his wife, Opal (Buchanan) Nelson, daughters: Angela (Mark) Morgan, Jennifer (Mike) Ganka, Amy (Bryan) Schaub, and his sister, Cecelia (David) Goff, as well as, 8 grandchildren: Adam, Alexis, Amanda, Zachary, Jacob, Emily, Anthony, and Hayden, 15 great-grandchildren, and countless others whose lives were made better by his presence. Bob was preceded in death by his father, Robert LeRoy Nelson, Sr. in 1980.
Visitation will be held at Farley, Estes Dowdle Funeral Home on Friday, February 21 from 5:00-7:00 PM with a recitation of the Rosary at 7:00 pm. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at 10:00 am at St. Philip Catholic Church.
