Ruth S. Horn, 97 of Battle Creek died peacefully with her family at her side, at Calhoun County Medical Care Facility on Saturday, September 3, 2016.
Ruth was born December 13, 1918 in Kansas City, Missouri to Henry and Fannie (Studna) Swartz. She grew up in Trenton, Missouri and was a 1936 graduate of Trenton High School. She earned her Bachelors of Arts Degree from the University of Oklahoma. Ruth and her husband co-owned Klein's Women's Ready to Wear at 44 W. Michigan Ave. in downtown Battle Creek, until retiring in 1984.
Ruth married Herman L. Horn on April 23, 1946 in Kansas City, Missouri. Sadly she was preceded in death by her husband, Herman on August 5. 2002. Surviving are a son, Stanley H. (Anna) Horn of Battle Creek; a daughter, Marianne VanWulfen of Lake Orion; granddaughter, Rachel (John) Guidry and great-grandsons, Ashton and Carter Guidry all of Richmond, TX; and a step-grandson, Jason (Cathryn) Hugger of Phoenix, AZ. In addition to her husband Ruth was also preceded in death by her father in 1975; her mother in 1989: her sister, Betty Gordon of Oklahoma City in 2008 and a son-in-law, Frank VanWulfen in 2016.
Ruth was a 70 year member of Temple Beth El and its Sisterhood; the Altrusa Club for over fifty years and served on the board of Emily Andrus Home for many years. Ruth was a voracious reader, loved solving crossword puzzles, cooking, and listening to 1940's era music and anything chocolate. Ruth will be remembered as a kind and strong woman; a loving mother and grandmother.
Ruth's family will receive friends at Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care 5:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 7, 2016. Funeral services will be officiated by Cantor Annie Rose at the funeral home 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 8, 2016. Committal and interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
