Sandra K. "Sandy" Allen, age 50, of Battle Creek went to be with her Lord on Friday evening, June 30, 2017 with her family by her side after a three year courageous battle with ALS. Sandy was born in Battle Creek on August 23, 1966, the youngest of four children born to James and Ellen (Bender) McDermid. She was a 1984 graduate of Pennfield High School and continued her education at Kellogg Community College and Spring Arbor University, receiving two Associate Degrees.
Sandy started her career working at the family farm, McDermid's Apple Orchard. She also worked in the accounting department at Kellogg's, as a teacher at the Battle Creek Christian School Daycare and Harper Creek Kids Center, and as the director at the North Avenue Children's Center.
Sandy enjoyed singing and was in several performances of "Make We Merry" with her Dad as part of the Battle Creek Community Chorus. She loved being a member of North Avenue Church of God where she was part of the praise team. Sandy went on numerous mission trips and enjoyed being part of all activities within the church. She also enjoyed reading, traveling, walking and going to baseball games.
Sandy married the "Love of Her Life", Timothy C. "Tim" Allen on August 19, 1988; he survives. She is also survived by her children, Jennifer Allen and TJ Allen; her mom, Ellen McDermid; her brother, Marc (Calvin Russell) McDermid; her sister, Paula (Robert) Liechty; her nephew, Joshua Liechty; mother-in-law, Jackie Allen; brother-in-law, Russ Allen; niece, Chelsea Allen, and great-nephew, Milo. Sandy was preceded in death by her dad, James McDermid; her sister, Linda McDermid-Brock; her brother-in-law, Lee Brock; her father-in-law, Frank Allen, and several aunts, uncles & cousins.
The family will receive friends 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, July 6, 2017 at Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care, Battle Creek and from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., Friday, July 7, 2017 at the North Avenue Church of God, 1079 North Ave., Battle Creek where a Celebration of Sandy's Life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday.
