Shirley Ann Eccles, 88, of Battle Creek, went to her home in heaven on November 18, 2020, while at Bronson Battle Creek, after contracting Covid-19. She was born in Battle Creek to Nellie and Elbert Eplee on September 27, 1932.
Shirley graduated from Battle Creek Central in 1950. She married Richard Eccles and they had five children together before being divorced. She attended the KCC Nursing Program. Shirley worked for the Calhoun County Health Department and Community Hospital as a lab technician until retiring in 1997.
Shirley enjoyed reading, sewing, playing the piano and care-giving to family and neighbors. She was a member of the Trinity Methodist church and was a leader in Cub Scouts and 4-H. Her most fulfilling hobbies were doll collecting and doll making, esp. Cabbage Patch and Madeline cloth dolls. She enjoyed jig-saw puzzles and feeding animals from her back porch. She was an amazing mother and grandma!
Shirley is survived by her brother, Gerald (Myra) Eplee of Kalamazoo; daughter, Julie (Len) Matthews of Battle Creek and their daughter, Jennifer (Chad) Rogers; son, Richard Eccles II; daughter, Bonnie (Howard) Newman and her daughters, Heather McMillan and Raena Fergusen (great-grandchildren: Faith (Andrew) Black (great-great grandson, Jasper), David and Morgan Fergusen) and their son, Joseph Newman, all in Oregon; son, Timothy (Kathy) Eccles of Portage, and their daughter, Kayla Eccles, in Grand Rapids, and son, Garrick (Mary Lou) Eccles and their son, Owen, in Niles, MI; and son, Thomas (Peggy) Eccles and their sons, A.J. and Andrew in Alabama. She was preceded in death by her parents and two infant sisters.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. The family is being served by Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care, Battle Creek. Shirley will be interred at Memorial Park Cemetery. Her granddaughter, Jennifer Rogers, is the chairperson for The Cancer Control Coalition of Calhoun County, which is through the Battle Creek Community Foundation.
