Sylvester “Sly” Malone Jr., age 77, of Battle Creek, Michigan passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 14, 2024, under the loving care of Rose Arbor Hospice of Kalamazoo, and in the company of his loving family. Sylvester was born to Sylvester Malone Sr. and Hattie Todd on September 9, 1947, in Memphis, Tennessee. He later moved to Battle Creek, Michigan, where he excelled on the track and field team, and graduated in 1966. Sylvester was a fan of German Shepherd Dogs, a talented artist, and was fond of landscaping.
Sylvester joined the army after high school and bravely served as a Sergeant in Vietnam. During his time in the service, he was awarded a Purple Heart, an Air Medal, and a Bronze Star. Sylvester worked for Kellogg as a mechanical engineer for years after his time in the service, and after his retirement enjoyed the leisurely time spent on hobbies and family.
Sylvester was preceded in death by his father, mother, and stepfather; son, Christopher Malone; brother, Phillip Todd; and special friend, Lorraine Sims. Sylvester’s memory will be cherished by his surviving daughter, Tameka Sims; sons, Jason Malone, Cameron Diggs; brothers, Herbert Todd, Flynn Todd; the mother of his children, Deborah Malone; ten grandkids; and numerous family members and friends.
According to his wishes, cremation has taken place and a service with full Military Honors at Fort Custer National Cemetery will be held on Thursday, December 5, 2024, at 1:30 p.m. Please bring a small bouquet of flowers, as after the service a wreath will be assembled in his memory.
