Walter Valentine Matyasic

Walter Valentine Matyasic, beloved husband and father, 88, of Battle Creek, Michigan died, Thursday, November 28, 2024 at Heritage Assisted Living in Battle Creek.

Walt, “Wally”, was born October 31, 1936, in Bellevue, Michigan on the family farm; to Anton F. and Sofia K. (Yuresich) Matyasic. He grew up in Bellevue working the family farm, attending St. Philip Elementary and graduating from St. Philip High School in 1955. He attended the University of Detroit where he earned his bachelor’s degree. Walt was employed by the Kellogg Company, for 32 years as a Quality Control Health Inspector, until retiring in 1992. During his time at Kellogg’s, he formed a fast friendship with Bart Hartson, which grew into a profitable business venture that exists to this day.

Walter Valentine Matyasic and Janis May Bungard were united in marriage on August 22, 1964, in Elmhurst, Illinois at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Surviving are Jan, his wife of 60 years; son, Michael Matyasic of Laingsburg, MI; daughter, Ann (Brad) Ross of Lake Orion, MI; three grandchildren, Savahanna Matyasic, Sydney (Geoff) McClung, Connor Ross; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and their families. Walt was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Kathryn Matyasic and Mary (Tony) Jurisic; and two brothers, John (Josephine) Matyasic and Tony (Lena) Matyasic.

Walt was an active member of St. Jospeh Catholic Church, donating his time, energy, and skills to ensure the success of many fundraising projects like Superfest over the years. He was a kind and generous man, who looked for ways to make others lives better through his daily interactions, regularly putting the welfare of others ahead of his own. Walt was a former altar boy, Boy Scout Troup Leader, and a member of the Kellogg 25 Year Club. He loved the outdoors, and in his younger years enjoyed hunting and fishing. He dearly loved his family and did everything he could for them. Walt had a great smile and sly sense of humor, which he used to put people at ease and bring laughter to their lives. He will be remembered for many things, among them love, dedication, humor, compassion and a willingness to help others.

Friends will be received 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 3, 2024, at Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Cremation Preneed Care, where the Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. following visitation.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Christopher Ankley 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 4, 2024, at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Committal and interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
