William E. “Bill” Bauer, 90, formerly of Battle Creek died peacefully at Drew’s Country Living in Hillsdale, Michigan on Monday, May 6, 2024.
Bill was born November 30, 1933, in Unity, Illinois to Franklin and Ida Earline (Heater) Bauer. He grew up in Marion, Illinois and was a graduate of Marion High School. Bill earned his bachelor’s degree in education from Southern Illinois University and later his master’s degree from Western Michigan University. Bill was first employed by Lakeview Schools at Territorial School, taught at Minges Elementary for 12 years, then transferred to Riverside Elementary as Assistant Principal and became Principal for a total of 17 years. Bill retired in 1988 after more than 30 years in the Lakeview School District.
William Eugene Bauer was united in marriage to Sadie Marie Mohan on June 10, 1956, at Cambria First Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife Sadie on May 22, 2022. Surviving are their two sons, David (Julia) Bauer and Brian Bauer of Jonesville MI; one granddaughter, Tara (Matthew) Bauer Hansen of Greenville, SC, two great-granddaughters, Hope and Lucy Hansen; and several nieces, nephews and their families. In addition to his wife, Sadie; Bill was also preceded in death by his parents; Franklin and Ida.
Bill and Sadie were members of First Baptist Church for 56 years and he was recently a member of First Presbyterian Church. He was passionate about organization, hard work and being independent. He loved to read, study genealogy and travel with Sadie. They sponsored Burmese families, taught them how to use a kitchen and conducted classes for Burmese families to help sustain themselves here in America. Bill and Sadie were very interested in attending seminars and hostels, always learning and teaching. Bill will be remembered for stepping up for his community.
Per Bill’s wishes, a flag presentation ceremony and a committal will be held at Fort Custer National Cemetery 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 22, 2024.
